Karrie Rebecca Dodez, named after her great grandmother, was born on July 5th, 2002 at 6:37 am. She arrived two weeks early and although she technically missed being a firecracker baby, her personality can sometimes be quite explosive.
Her first year was rather eventful. She slept through the night at 2 months, laughed at 3 months, crawled at 10 months, and took her first steps just before she turned a year old.
Karrie was a wonderful baby, but as we were knee deep in the "terrible twos" we were struggling with her stubborness. She would scream and cry for her way. She was very pleasant, but boy did she have a mind of her own. Now we know God gave her that personality trait to help her fight her illness.
In May of 2005 we went on our family vacation to Outerbanks, NC. Karrie absolutely loved the sand but was petrified of the ocean and would not go near it. We had a wonderful time and Karrie's top picks were our family bike ride and playing in the sand.
Karrie was potty training in late June of 2005 and sporting big girl panties. She wasn't always happy about it usually when it wasn't her idea. Mommy wasn't sure if she could beat the stubborness regarding potty training in time for Karrie to go to preschool.
A bout with a fever in mid June, potty training issues, another fever in July around her birthday, and more symptoms that were unexplained - crying in the night, not wanting to stand, pale, just plain not happy - sent us to Akron Children's Hospital for bloodwork and it all unfolded from there.
2005-2006: Karrie is a true Disney princess. Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella are her favorites now. Barney, Dora, Blue and Wiggles rank very high as well. Videos have been her main stay lately with Barney Christmas videos topping her selections.
Karrie enjoys playdoh, painting, and stickers. Her newest favorite is playing Little Bear or Little People games on the computer. Karrie rides her tricycle, diapers and dresses her dolls (with help even from Grandpa) and used to love "wrestling" with Daddy and big brother Steven (age 5). Steven prays almost every night for Jesus to make Karrie better so she can play rough again. Karrie likes a variety of books and music and does a great number with "Jesus Loves the Little Children" and "This Little Light of Mine." She also has learned Christmas favorites "Up on the Housetop" and "Rudolph" thanks to brother, Steven, singing them a lot.
She also is into fashion, having some older girl cousins lead the way. Sunglasses, shoes and hats top the list. She now is sporting several zipper front, hooded sweathshirts that are quite fashionable. It is colder in the hospital rooms.
Her favorite food list has been modified. It is now pizza, mini bagels, mashed potatoes, mini Oreos, Fritos, chips and dip. She likes her cherry Pedialyte and Grandma Richard's orange pop, too. She used to be a fresh fruit, salad, and yogurt eater. Those days are sure to return. She displays her independence by opening her straws and spreading butter on her bread all by herself.
Karrie's favorite color is pink (surprise, surprise!) with purple and red tied for second. She will quickly let you know that Steven's favorite color is orange. Many prizes and toys for enduring tests and bloodwork at Akron Children's were orange and passed onto big brother.
Karrie is truly one of God's children and He has given her to us for a time. His plan for her is best. We trust that He will heal her of her tumor and allow her to be a testimony to the power of prayer. She know's there is a bad thing in her belly and she says "Jesus will get it out of there."
2009: Karrie is a true High School Musical fan! She loves to sing and dance to the music and has and still can watch the movies for hours and hours. She gets out her microphone and puts on the short skirts and heels and struts her stuff- six and a half going on sixteen!
Karrie loves to watch videos and read books. We go to the library often. Her favorite videos are Eloise, AirBud, and the twins Kate and Ashley. She likes to pick out her books, too. She just mastered reading "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" yesterday! She loves books about letter sounds and things around us. She goes from hooked on Berenstain Bears to Arthur depending on the library we are at.
Karrie goes to kindergarten in the morning and loves learning, being with her friends (and boyfriends), and is a good student. Her teacher said she helps get the kids who are off track, back on track. She mothers some a little bit. At home she continues to have a great imagination and enjoys pretending to go shopping, cook and bake, have picnics and tea parties, play with baby dolls and pets, and play school and doctor. She just loves to fill bags with whatever and of course not put things back where she found them. (Mommy goes nuts!) With the winter weather she loves the snow and sledding, but doesn't like the cold temps much. Karrie also enjoys making things in the kitchen and drawing or coloring at her table or easel. She also loves to play games and most recently learned how to play UNO.
Fashion is still her thing: shoes, purses, changing outfits often, nail polish, shopping, etc. Her favorite color is still pink. She loves to paint Grandma's and Mommy's nails and has some new fancy ways to decorate them.
Karrie's favorite food is chips and dip followed by probably pizza, peppers, and gum or candy.
God has healed Karrie for these years gone by and we pray and hope the healing will continue into the future where God has great plans for this little lady!
2010: Karrie now loves anything Hannah Montana. She sings with the music from HM's The Movie soundtrack complete with the microphone and stand, the outfit, and the wig. Beautiful! She enjoys listening to Christian children's music from VBS and church Christmas programs and Mommy's Christian music like Mandisa, Casting Crowns, and Mark Schultz.
She still loves to sit and watch movies...favorites being anything with the Buddies (Snow Buddies, etc) or Disney Princesses. She is now also hooked on the trio of Fireproof, Fly Wheel, and Facing the Giants that a church produced. Her favorite tv programs are America's Funniest Videos and Home Makeover. She likes Mickey Mouse on Disney channel and also watches Boomerang for all the cartoons.
Karrie has continued to improve in reading. She now reads most books at her grade level well, but sometimes needs help. She was proud to have read a Fancy Nancy book with Daddy because the words were in some type of cursive writing. Karrie loves to get chapter books and try to read them. Her favorite book from the school library is the Birthday Car. Her and her friend each check it out about every other week. She still loves to have the Berenstain Bears' books read to her.
Karrie likes playing school at home more than going to school. Although she does not complain about going to school and tells us about her day with exicitement usually. But if she is asked if she likes school...by doctors or family friends...she always says "No!" We think she listens to her brother's answer and makes it her own. Karrie loves math and has done very well on her tests in other subjects as well including social studies, science, and spelling. She says the tests are "EASY!" Karrie is also learning Bible verses for Sunday school class and doing very well memorizing them.
You will often find Karrie pretending. She has a great imagination. She plays school, restaurant, shopping, babies, barbies, doll house, etc. She likes the cooler weather and riding her bike out on the cement. She likes to draw roads with chalk for her to ride her bike on. Karrie also drives her jeep. She likes to play catch with Daddy, too.
Karrie is into her piano lessons again this year. She likes riding her bike to her lessons up the road. She does practice and she's doing well her teacher says. Not many other extra-curriculars for Karrie. She doesn't do sports much, but loves to sing and dance. However, she doesn't want to be on stage or take any dance classes.
And finally Karrie's other favorite pass time...FOOD! Karrie still loves chips, but does more Doritos and cheesy munchies. She loves salsa, sour cream, and cheese on tortilla chips, too. Pizza is still number one on her list with a liking for cheeseburgers, salad, and fresh fruit like peaches and pears. Karrie also loves pop, but has taken a surprising liking to milk which she didn't like much last year. She looks forward to Sunday nights that include popcorn and AFV.
We know God is protecting Karrie and allowing her to feel good despite the treatments and tumor in her knee. We trust God for the future He has planned for Karrie.
